What is a Cloud Tank?

Cloud tank VFX is a technique used in filmmaking to create the illusion of clouds.

The effect is created by suspending white paint or ink in a tank of water, usually a large aquarium. The paint or ink is suspended due to the creation of two separate water layers within the tank. The layers are formed by using water of different densities, usually salt water, and fresh water.

This effect creates the appearance of clouds, which can then be used to add weather and atmosphere to a scene. The standard cloud tank effect is characterized by rapidly developing clouds or clouds that move in unusual directions.

Cloud tank effects are a relatively inexpensive way to add surreal weather to a scene.
